I have recently decided to take up a new hobby; the great hobby of making my own beer! This has been tons of fun so far. I have beer reading everything I can find about the subject. I decided to go to a local brew shop and see what all the fuss was about. This place happens to offer a free class with the purchase of a qualifying kit. I found one that looked like it would be a good fit for me, and to my great surprise it was only 5 dollars more than what the cheapest one I found online was, and this one didnt cost me any shipping and I got a free class so all in all its cheaper at the local shop!
I showed up for the class tonight about 6pm. Brett, the guy teaching the class, was ready for me when I got there and already had a pot of water on the stove heating up. This was a one on one class, so needless to say that was a major plus. He covered a lot of stuff and knew his material VERY well. I was never able to ask a question he couldnt answer. He stressed, as did all the other material I have read, that sterilization is one of the biggest keys to making good beer. He says “If you can boil water you can make beer. If you can boil water and keep every thing sterilized you can make great beer.” The process was so easy and didnt really take as long as I thought it would, and I was out of there and on my way home with 5 gallons of wort by 8:30 or so. Now the waiting game begins. In a week or so Ill be ready to rack my beer, and then bottle it up and in a few weeks I should have about 50 12oz home made Oktoberfest beers!
